The Woodcut is an ancient technique. Designing , cutting and printing from a plank of wood has been an important communication device in many cultures. 
The principles are the same today. An image is drawn or applied onto a blank  wooden block .
The areas that the artist does not wish to print are removed using various gouges , knives and v- shaped tools.
The block is then hand inked  and printed .
